Given that ancient people would have observed the passing of 366 days as the earth rotated around the sun, (365.25 but round to a choice of convenient figure,) it would seem logical to have seen circular henges staked out in 366 stages, or degrees. But it’s noted that the circle has been divided into 360 divisions since Sumerian and ancient Egyptian civilisations. So why and when did the change occur?
